New York Fashion Week is undoubtedly one of the most exciting weeks for fashion lovers, and year after year creative minds, both new and old keep up its reputation. This year was no different with the fashion week creating several iconic moments and leaving marks in people's minds.
Here are my favorite moments to remember at NYFW this year. & the looks that made it straight to the VMAs.
Area
The Area Couture Fall Winter 2023 paralleled evolution through fashion and the evolution of humans. It was a collection full of bones, fur and materials humans originally used for survival. Highlighted structural formation of humans were mimicked in boning techniques in the garments (the technique used in corsets, for example)… showing progression from raw material clothing designs with the use of fur, to structured and sophisticated pieces.

Sami Moro Vintage
Sami Moro Vintage, chose to highlight the impact of the fashion world, with a runway-first live upcycling by the Designer in her show titled, “Zero Waste”.

Collina Strada
Fun, chaotic, and a little bit mad, Collina Strada’s collection channelling the 90’s had “models grinning maniacally as they stomped down the runway to pop”, New York fashion week reported. The designer explained how she aimed to show how through all the madness in the world, where everything’s falling apart, we’re smiling, because what else can we do?

Grace Ling
Grace Ling’s Spring Summer 2024, Neverland, and debut NYFW collection was a collection featuring body armour, true to the designer’s style. An elegant combination of neutral colours and metals hugging the models, the collection aimed to show the balance between the Man and the Machine.

Staud
I absolutely adored Staud’s new collection, but it was the larger than life “mega moon” bag of every woman’s dreams that got the audience and people talking, and for all the right reasons.

Who Decides War
Who Decides War’s Spring Summer 2024 collection was titled “Alteration Consultants” with a live seamstress sewing on the runway, and fabric scraps all over the place.

Helmut Lang
Designer Peter Do debuted his first collection with Helmut Lang, a collection inspired by the people of New York. The designer wanted the collection to speak to all the people of New York, not just fashion minds. A chaotic finale, the haphazard final way of displaying the collection definitely reflected the city. “I want to dress New York City” is what he remarked.
Bad Binch TongTong
While I must admit, Terrence Zhou of Bad Binch TongTong’s collection, “Alien Dreamtime Zumba” left me lost for words and a little bit confused, it was nostalgic, it was unique, it was creative and it was most definitely wild. The designer, known for having avant grade, over the top designs, definitely channelled that energy, having well, aliens doing zumba and reminded us of how fashion can sometimes, simply be fun.

Puppets and Puppets
A runway featuring toy moving dogs carrying Puppets and Puppets' bags? Precisely.

PH5
A new and innovative knitwear designer paid homage to the artisans behind the works debuting the runway, with two finale wild and creative looks that got people talking.

Colin LoCascio
Colin LoCascio’s collection was nostalgic, full of colour, and elements to throw you back to your childhood. It was a collection inspired by the designer’s 7th birthday gift, a fish tank from his godfather and elements of his childhood, like Lisa Frank, Beanie Babies and erasers he collected.

The star-studded VMAs, that took place during NYFW, had looks taken straight off this season's runway and onto the red carpet.

Apart from fresh off the runway looks, celebrities like Selena Gomez and Cardi B, also had noteworthy looks.
Selena Gomez in Oscar De La Renta (styled by Erin Walsh & team)
If couture was a look, it was this dress made with thousands of scarlet coloured beads.

Olivia rodrigo in custom Ludovic de Saint Sernin (styled by Danielle Goldberg)
A dress featuring 150,000 swarovski crystals that lit up the runway.

Cardi B in custom Dilara Findi Kolgu (styled by Kollin Carter)
A “Girl Armour dress’ made of thousand of hairclips by a girls team. A mini version of the same dress was recently spotted on Olivia Rodrigo in her cover shoot for the Rolling Stone Magazine.

A NYFW to remember, and a strong start to the month of fashion weeks around the world.
